Ch. 117 - Explanation II
The atmosphere turned silent after Schnee revealed the identities of hers and Syr. For the majority of people in the Eternal World a person of mixed blood like half Elves was a group that was considered inferior to other races. It is like discrimination that considers them to be an impure group or some sort of low-lying mixed being.
However, it was not as Schnee and Syr thought. Ray didn't speak because he felt very sleepy now so had no intention of speaking unless absolutely necessary. After a while Syr finally realized that Ray did not listen to them seriously.
“Hai, you?! Aren't you listening to what my sister is saying seriously?” Syr said in a slightly loud voice.
“Ah, sorry I heard it. So what if you're half elf and half human? I thought Schnee stopped talking because she was thinking about something... Hoam..” Ray replied with a lazy tone while yawning occasionally.
“Ah, this... We just said that we are a mixed race, you are not bothered by that?” Schnee asked puzzledly, so far the people they met always stayed away from them after finding out that they were a mixed race.
This was the first time for the two half-Elf sisters to meet someone who still looked upon them as equals after finding out that they were a mixed race. Unknowingly both Schnee and Syr looked at Ray's face seriously as if making sure that he wasn't hiding something.
“Why are you staring at my face? I know that I am very handsome, kind, helpful, and diligent in saving. But isn't it too soon for you to like me?” Ray said in a playful tone as if the drowsiness he was suffering from disappeared instantly.
“Bah... W-w-what are you saying? Who likes you? Stupid!” Syr's face immediately flushed red as if it turned into a tomato while refuting Ray's words stutteringly.
“I do think Mr. Ray is different to most people I meet, but that doesn't mean I like Mr. Ray or anything like that.” While Schnee could still maintain her composure and answer Ray's words with a small laugh.
Ray who saw Syr stammered because he was ashamed to tease him further. “Really? Does this beautiful Miss Syr not like me?” Ray brought his face closer to the face of Syr reddened, as close to Ray's face the more shame that Syr felt to the point that Syr almost drowned his face into his chest because of his shame.
“Alright, you can say it.” Ray himself also knows what is more important and should come first.
“So they chased us because..” Schnee then explains why the group of assassins are after them. It turns out that Schnee and Syr were once captured by slave traders who intended to take them both as gifts for a Duke in Qin Empire. But they were both lucky to escape after taking advantage of the carelessness of the guards at the Duke's residence. After escaping Schnee and Syr decide to flee to the Forest of Death.
“Is that all? They wouldn't bother sending a hundred assassins just for two campura.” Ray felt that something was strange about Schnee's explanation, so he asked if there was anything Schnee missed in her explanation.
“It should be just it-" Schnee finally remembered something. “I just remembered, in addition to enslaving mixed races like us inside that place were also many other female slaves both from the Human Race, Elf Race, and others, and the Beastman Race and they are pure races not a mix like us.” Schnee recalled that the Duke's noble, had many female slaves who were not of mixed race like him.
“So that's the reason, it's worth it he didn't let you off the hook easily. Surely the Duke's nobles were afraid to divulge his secret to the public, because it would make him lose his prestige and power.” Ray now understood the reason they were being chased, it was because they held information about the weakness of the noble.
“It is better now that you rest here, and there is no need to worry that the leader of this post is a good person and does not discriminate against others. I'll also be haunting somewhere else.” Ray decides to let Schnee and Syr rest to recover their health.
“One more time thank you for helping us.” Schnee is back to thank Ray.
“Not a problem, I go first.” Ray leaves the care tent and intends to find another tent to rest.
