So, he can't complain. It is also part of his duty, a duty he must bear.
The train kept rolling around, until suddenly the train bounced and Evie almost fell to the floor. He was immediately startled and he raised his face, only to find out that a big strong hand was holding his shoulder, calming him down. Gavriel had kept him from falling to the floor.
Still, he gasped and stiffened as their eyes met. His face darkened and he immediately let go.
"You're not gonna tell me that I broke the deal because I touched you without permission, are you?" ask her in a cold but deep and charming voice. He could not believe that his voice was too perfect. Why would nature give all of this perfection to a creature like him? That's not fair!
Evie shook her head like a toy.
"No, of course not. You saved me. N-no need to ask permission under such circumstances."
His expression softened somewhat as he watched her.
"I think we should find lodging—"
"No!" Evie cuts him off and when she realizes how she answered him, she lowers her gaze.
"It's okay. I'm. I'm fine. I'm used to this. Besides, we have to cross the border before noon."
The man was speechless, but Evie felt the man was looking at her sharply.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I'd rather sleepless nights than be the cause of fights."
He heard his quiet sigh. The two of them sat back in silence. Evie could not help but peek at him and she saw the deep lines on her forehead getting deeper the more the carriage bounced.
It occurred to him that he must have hated riding a carriage. Vampires, he heard, are faster than any creature, even faster than birds. They are able to achieve their goals many times faster than humans. He had never seen a vampire in action so curiosity suddenly hit him.
"Is...is this your first time? Riding train?" she asked.
His gaze fell on her and looked at her.
"No, but this is the longest I've lived in it."
"Oh." He noticed that there seemed to be no one left from the number of vampires that were with them in the palace. They must have left him long ago.
"How many hours do you need to reach the imperial palace if I'm not with you?"
"Just a few hours."
Evi's eyes widened. He heard that it would take two days to reach the vampire kingdom. For a moment, his eyes flickered in astonishment.
He thought that to be able to travel like that would be amazing! He did not have to endure an uncomfortable and boring train ride. Seeing him, he wondered if he was dying from impatience because he was forced to endure traveling at such a slow pace because of him. He will be in the imperial palace now, resting.
"You really don't need to accompany me—"
"Did I disgust you so much that you didn't even want me to be in the same carriage as you?" Eyes squinting. Although her expression remained calm, Evie felt goosebumps as soon as she looked into her eyes.
Shaking his head, Evie spoke.
"No. That's not what I meant. I just thought it must be very uncomfortable for you to .. stay on the train because you're not used to it."
The displeasure in his eyes quickly disappeared causing Evie to sigh in relief. Gavriel looked so calm and silent, completely like a perfect and harmless statue. Her appearance, Evie thought, must be the only reason why she could talk to him like this without trembling in fear.
"Did you say you're used to this?" She asked.
"You don't look uncomfortable, Evielyn. I'd rather carry you and finish this journey, but I doubt you can withstand the cold outside this vehicle."
"Take me?"
"Yes. The others would have already reached the capital by now if they were to travel at full speed. I'd have to walk slower if I took you, but even so, we'd probably get there before noon, but.." She's watching. "That's too risky for you" he concluded.
Silence enveloped them once more as Evie's eyes began to weigh again. The dreaded rain also came.
It was cold tonight and it was raining too! He pulled his robe closer to his chest as he began to feel the temperature drop instantly...
"Come here," the vampire prince said suddenly, causing Evie to turn her head towards him.
"Look at me and sleep."
Evi gnashing. He did not expect the offer at all. And his surprised expression made him out of his mind.
Gavriel's face became a little darker when she saw his reaction and she saw his jaw slightly clenched.
"What's with that look?" He narrowed his eyes but at the next moment, he bowed so close to her that Evie almost gasped.
"Even if you think vampires are cold-blooded monsters, I'm not just a vampire to you right now. Let me remind you one more time," his voice hardened.
"that I am also your husband. So stop wishing I treated you like you were my enemy. Do understand? Evielyn?"
His words kept him quiet and his heart pounded, but he eventually nodded, and he moved away and rubbed his hair with his fingers.
He looked at her again and spoke. This time, his voice was softer and there was a friendly expression in his eyes.
"Come, wife. Don't worry, I have no plans to eat you."
"Nobody can hurt you, not even me. There was nothing to be afraid of," she added gently and before Evie realized it, as if she had cast a magic spell on him, she complied.
She shifted and made room for him and then she found herself half lying on it with her back pressed against her chest and her arms wrapped around him, holding him, holding him back, keep it attached to it while the train slides forward.
It seemed that his exhaustion and dizziness had made him leave because of how little resistance he had to the offer of unbearable comfort. The back of her head was stuck to her sturdy and hard chest, which suddenly felt like a pillow, as she relaxed comfortably.
This was the first time he had experienced something like this. He had never let any man hug him like this before.
She felt amazing because, even in a dizzy state, her body reacted in a strange way as she hugged him. And the most surprising thing was that he didn't hate her. She thought she would hate physical closeness to vampires so this was surprising.
However, he brushed it off. He thought that he felt this way because of the strange situation he was in. He might be really exhausted.
“You....warm..” murmured in a sleepy voice, his eyes closed. "I thought vampires were cold."
"I'm the only exception" he replied and he forced his heavy eyelids to open.
An amused smile curled on her lips as she watched him force herself to open her eyes, struggling to fight back against her dizziness. "What are you"
"Hush..." His finger almost landed on his lips. "Sleep. Tomorrow, I'll tell you," he whispered and Evie could no longer resist the call of the sleeping god and finally succumbed to his irresistible invitation.
