"I never thought you were a possessive woman, Lady Evielyn." Prince Caius draws his attention from Gavriel. Wh-what? She's she? Possessive?
Evi speechless. He felt like his brain was having trouble functioning.
"I. i..."
"I hope Gavriel has explained to you the matter of Lady Thea." The crown prince ventured into guessing and when Evie's expression sold him that Gavriel never mentioned anything, Caius sighed.
"You already know that vampires are no longer monogamous, right?" ask her, and Evie nodded. He's heard of this before. At one point, long ago, vampires were one-woman creatures. However, ever since the war against dragons began, the emperor at the time had changed the law, allowing the vampires to take more than one wife, in order to increase their population.
"Of course, it's not a forced thing. Most vampires still have one wife even today, but Gavriel's case is different so she must not break off her engagement to Lady Thea."
"G-gavriel's Case?"
"She has been engaged to Lady Thea since they were young and you, My Lady, are human ..." The prince stopped as Evie looked at him with eyes filled with questions. So, what if he's human?
Evie will ask again when the music ends – makes them bend each other and bend like a habit. As they faced each other again, the crown prince smiled at her as Evie immediately turned her head to where Gavriel was standing.
When she looks at her back as she holds Thea's arm towards the balcony, Evie finds herself overwhelmed by intense new emotions. He did not even realize that he was back in his seat until the crown prince spoke to him again.
"It's nice talking to you, Lady Evielyn. If you have any further questions, we can discuss further on the balcony, as it seems like my sister is still busy." The prince gave her a friendly smile, but Evie could no longer fake her expression as her face fell.
He bowed apologizing.
"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but I want to rest tonight now. As you said, I'm only human so I need a break. It's nice talking to you." Evie had no idea what was going to happen to her.
His chest felt tight and as if it was hurting without actually feeling the pain.
Surprisingly, his eyes felt hot and stung something ferocious. He moves involuntarily, not not noticing how his legs speed him up in his quest to find a place where he can be alone and trying to figure out the chaos that is in his head.
Without giving the crown prince a chance to reply, he bowed low and walked away in a hurry.
The crown prince watched the beautiful human girl in red as Gavriel's three men immediately followed him.
As soon as the woman in red left, the prince's sapphire blue eyes sharpened sharply before her gaze fell onto the balcony where Gavriel had come out a moment ago.
"Let's end our engagement, Thea." Gavriel's tone was loud and firm. The atmosphere on the balcony suddenly turned extremely cold.
Gavriel scolded himself for completely forgetting this.
He was supposed to deal with Thea first before taking his wife to the palace.
But the matter of her previous engagement with Thea completely escaped her mind. It would be fair to say that it might not have weighed too much on his mind from the start.
He was supposed to talk to Thea as soon as he arrived at the capital while his wife was still sleeping!
"No." Thea didn't even hesitate. His gaze on Gavriel was serious and unrelenting. It looked as if she would never give up no matter what Gavriel said or did to her.
Gavriel seemed surprised by Thea's reply. It never crossed his mind that he would refuse.
An engagement can only be legally decided if both parties agree to decide. If one of them refused, no one could break off the engagement.
This is why Gavriel hated his forced engagement to Thea. He knew that the emperor had arranged this engagement so that he would be bound to something, because Thea's father was a loyal general of the emperor.
Gavriel doesn't hate Thea because it's not her fault and since they were young, Thea has never hugged her like a desperate woman. Before he left the empire, the two of them rarely met or even talked to each other.
They had never even tried to have a romantic relationship with each other before and that was why Gavriel even forgot that she sometimes had a fiancee. He knew that the same thing happened to Thea.
Even when they first met, they never enjoyed each other's company. And Thea had never tried to approach him before. He had only just started to approach her and talk to her when she returned over a month ago. So why would she refuse the annulment of their engagement now?
"I'm married now, Thea. I already have a wife." Gavriel stressed, his demeanor and expression was calm but the look in his eyes was intense.
"I don't mind, Gavriel."
The answer made Gavriel's eyes narrow.
"I object. You know I'll never have more than one wife."
"I know."
"Why did you refuse? Is your father threatening you?"
Thea played her dark chocolate key as she replied.
"No. My decision has nothing to do with my father or anyone else. It's my own decision."
Gavriel's jaw is hardened. "Then what exactly do you want to happen for still resisting like this?"
There have been many cases of vampire engagement where one party refused to end the engagement. But because vampire law allows polygamy, the man can always marry another person even though he is still engaged to another girl. Thus, most women who refuse to break off the engagement eventually give up, while some let it go until they marry someone else.
"He's human, Your Grace. If he's a vampire, I'll leave you here, right now. But he's human."
"What exactly do you want to say? So what if he's human?" Gavriel doesn't know why but he's checked. He's not usually like this.
He had dealt with so many sensitive and political issues before and nothing could make him lose his composure. So why was he suddenly upset that Thea showed that his wife was just a human being?
"Your Majesty, I'm sure you know what I'm trying—"
"Just say it, Thea."
Thea's surprised. Did he test it? He knew how smart this guy was.
This prince was not someone who needed an explanation of obvious things like this. And why does he sound upset and angry? Was he so upset and angry that his emotions got the better of him? Thea silently gritted her teeth. He knew what kind of man this prince was.
In fact, he had never seen her so emotionally and worked like this before. He had always been calm and composed even in battle and even in front of the emperor so why was he acting like a hot-tempered and stupid person now? There was no way he could not understand what he meant! But fine, if he wanted her to spell it out for him, then he would be happy to say it.
