That morning Kirana felt something was different about her. Something was supposed to happen, but it didn't happen. He couldn't remember what it was, but he knew it was important. He saw a calendar hanging on the bathroom wall. There is a red pen that marks four days in the previous month. He looked at the moon next to him. Clean no scribbles. He started counting.
“Oh, Shit. Shit, shit, shit.” strangulation stuck. He's starting to panic. “No, no. This can't happen. Yes, for the first. No, for the second one. Can't.”
How could he be so careless? He should be able to take care of himself. Two sundays. He's been a month late for two weeks. Her period always comes regularly every month. This had never happened before, except at the time she was pregnant with William. Just sec. Does this mean she is pregnant with her second child?
Kirana touched her stomach. Another child? They made a child for the second time while in Singapore. But this time, none of them planned it. At least, Kirana didn't plan this. Oh, naw. Miles can't find out. It was time for him and William to leave this city. He can no longer delay it.
“Mom,” Sounded William's voice outside the bathroom door. Kirana jumped because her son's voice surprised her. He took a deep breath to calm himself.
“Yeah, baby?” kirana Sahut.
“I'm hungry.” complained William. Had he not been silent to think for himself, he had finished his bath and could have prepared breakfast for his son.
“One minute, okay? I'm coming out.” whispered through the door. And he welcomed the silence that came. That meant that his son would not bother him for a while.
“What do you do in the bathroom?” ask William slowly. Kirana raised her hand to the ceiling, praying for calm.
“What do you think I did? Of course shower.” Kirana rolled her eyeballs because of that ridiculous question.
“How much longer? I'm hungry.” complained his son again.
“I won't be able to start if you keep asking, Will.” Kirana said in frustration.
“But I want Mommy.” protest William. And, she started crying. Kirana groaned in annoyance, took her bathing coat from the clothes hanger, and put it on.
“Seriously, Will? Can't you wait a minute?” kirana said while opening the door.
“Mommy!” she cheered and extended her hands to her mother. Kirana shook her head slowly then raised her body.
He took his son to the kitchen. “When will you learn to obey me? Can't you see I need a shower?”
“I miss you, Mommy.” William wrapped both his hands around Kirana's neck. He sighed softly.
“Miss you, too, Will. You really look like Daddy.” Kirana shook her head in surprise.
“Daddy? Who's my Daddy, Mom?” ask William suddenly. Kirana almost sleeps her head against the wall because of her stupidity. He's speechless.
“Nobody.” replied Kirana quickly.
“My classmates have Daddy. I don't have Daddy. Why, Mom?” ask William sadly.
“Because you're special, Will. You don't need Daddy. You have Mommy.” Kirana just said whatever came to her mind.
“So, my classmates have Daddy because they don't have Mommy? Why would any of my friends have Mommy and Daddy? Is it because they are not special?” He still asks.
He sat William in one of the chairs surrounding the dining table. The closet's almost gone. Breakfast options are limited to cereals and eggs. He sighed in relief seeing that there was still a box of fresh milk in the fridge.
“Well, what do you want to eat?” ask Kirana.
“Piza!” william cheer pleased.
“Yang is right. Who eats pizza in the morning?” Kirana rolled her eyeballs. He looked at the other options they had. “How about cereal and milk?”
“No!” reject William.
“Pancake?”
“No!”
“Will, our breakfast options this morning are very limited. Or do you want scrambled eggs?” He gave his son another choice.
“I hate eggs! Miss Helen cooks eggs every day as you go.” William crossed both his arms in front of his chest.
“Oh, yes! Ii'm sorry. I forgot about that.” Kirana stroked her son's head. “Poor child. Next time you won't be taken care of by him anymore. Don't worry.” William looked.
“You want to go again tomorrow?” asked William with teary eyes. Kirana groaned softly and hugged her son. Again he spoke wrongly. “Do not go, Mommy.”
“I'm not going anywhere. If I leave, I'll take you. Yes?” Kirana kissed William's head.
“Iya.” said William while sobbing.
“How about chicken porridge? You want to eat that?” ask Kirana. William nodded his head happily. “You wait here, yes. Here, eat your chocolate cereal while I shower. Later we eat chicken porridge near bus stop.”
“Okay.” replied William according to. Kirana walked quietly out of the kitchen. He really wanted to touch the water now. “Mommy?”
Kirana stopped walking. “Yes, Will?”
“Why don't I have Daddy?” ask William again. Kirana sighed softly. He thought his son had already forgotten his unanswered question. He took a deep breath, then said the thing he had been saying to people all along.
“Daddy is dead.”
Kirana let out a sigh of relief she was not late to arrive at the office. He knew it would be difficult to explain what the word death meant to a five-year-old. William asked a long question. Arriving in his room, he prepared his presentation for their weekly meeting. At ten in less than ten minutes, he headed for the meeting room. The meeting started when Miles came into the room. Kirana only shook her head when she heard the woman sitting next to her groaning softly.
One-by-one section heads delivered their plans for the week and performance evaluations from the previous week. Miles asks questions and gives his ideas where necessary. Other participants of the meeting did the same. But when it came to his turn, Miles suddenly had so many questions about marketing programs. He even asked her to gather all her members and share what she learned during the seminar. Then he asked Kirana to make a report regarding the training.
There was nothing Kirana could do but agree. He knew what the man was trying to do. Miles is preventing him from resigning his company. But he won't be able to do it again. He could reject his first resignation letter and tear it into small pieces. But not this time. Kirana will go whatever Miles does to keep her from leaving.
