The sound of footsteps grew stronger and stronger in Eph's ears. The girl he was holding bent her head to carry her chin with her body shaking, Lin was really scared.
Slowly Ef turned the radio volume knob to the off position, he also turned off Lin's radio. An anticipation is that if Maya or Hamish return to talk using their radio, the voice will expose Ef and Lin to the enemy.
The sound of the steps was getting closer and swirling at a distance of about five meters from them. Whoever was approaching it, was currently brushing around the sunflower trees.
“Whatever happens, you don't move. Stay on the ground.” Ef whispered as quietly as possible right in front of Lin's ear.
“If anything happens to me, you shoot them with my gun. Then run towards the forest as fast as possible.” Lin's hand responded to the whisper by gripping Ef's shirt.
Slowly Ef released his weapon and Lin's weapon which he had been flanking. He did not pull the gun from his waist but instead pulled the dagger hanging on his right thigh. All his movements were almost without sound.
The sound of steps approaching. Ef tightened his grasp, veins and blood vessels seemed to spring up from his forehead and arms. He was fully concentrated on responding to all possibilities.
Ef could already see the shoes of the man approaching from the gap of the flower stems, only a few more steps he would find them.
He counts in his heart,
Lima...,
Four.i.., four...,
Three.., uh...,
Two.., though...,
One!
With a very quick movement, Ef grabbed the man's leg and pulled hard. The man collapsed instantly and Ef wasted no chance.
Quickly he climbed onto the man's body, and smothered his mouth with his left hand. While the dagger in Ef's right hand was directed to the man's left eye. His eyes widened, flushed. The position has turned around, the hunt becomes a hunter.
“FREDDY, WHERE ARE YOU!”
There was another voice shouting not far from them. Ef felt he had to eliminate this one opponent before the other. While continuing to smother the man's mouth, Ef pointed the dagger at his neck. But the dagger touched a metal object. It turned out that the man was also wearing the same Necklace as himself, but the man's necklace light was still blue.
“You are a participant of Hell Game?”
The man nodded. The other voice that was calling out was getting closer and closer. Ef pulls the man to stand, but his dagger is still stuck on the opponent's neck.
Ef's sudden movement dismantled his position. The other man immediately turned to them, immediately pointing a gun at Ef who was hiding behind his friend.
The way the man held the gun was very amateurish, they were not a balanced opponent for Ef.
“Let down your weapon then my friend let go!” But Ef's warning was not responded positively by the opponent, he was still pointing the gun forward. Ef pressed his dagger, and made a scratch on the neck of the man he was holding hostage.
“Bro, please! Lower your weapon!” the man that Ef was hostage was courting his friend.
“You are wrong way, check point one over there. we have got code.”
The tension on the face of the man who was pointing a gun faded, slowly he lowered his weapon.
“Really?”
Ef raised his head and showed a small lamp on his neck that had turned yellow. Ef gave the code for the man to drop the weapon and back off. The man complies. Then Ef took his hostage moving towards the gun. Another man moved away.
When Ef had stepped on the opponent's gun, he pushed his hostage forward.
“We have passed the check points, the position is in the lighthouse. Stick your finger to the sensor then the code will appear!”
The two men seemed to be in disbelief at what they heard. An opponent had just explained how to get the code to them.
“Why did you tell us that way, we are all opponents?” said the man who was a hostage Ef.
“We are all people who are forced into participating. As much as possible we should get a gap to survive without killing each other. You better hurry up there, before the code gets another team.”
“Are you going to attack us when you turn around?”
“Heh, I told you, right now your opponent is not us, but another team that has not got the code.”
“Alright, thank you. We'll turn around.” Both men turned around.
“Hei!” Ef's shout made them turn their heads, Ef kicked the gun he had just stepped on them.
“I suggest you guys hurry up before the other team comes. Good Luck, Dude!”
“Thank you”
The man crouched down to pick up his weapon, then moved away. After they disappeared behind the flower stems, Ef returned to Lin's position.
Hearing Ef's voice, Lin immediately hugged the man tightly.
“I was so scared. Thank goodness you've returned!” lin lirih said. Then he seemed to notice something. He let go of his embrace.
“You killed them?”
“No, they I let go. They are also harmless.”
“Oh, Thank goodness.”
Ef then activates the radio back.
“Maya, Hamish, you guys hear me?”
The radio sounds of Ef and Lin were noisy, though,
“Oh my god, thank goodness you guys survived. I thought you were dead. Your radio has no response.” Maya answered from her connection.
“Let us tell you, now you guys watch. We'll cross the prairie!”
***
After successfully crossing the prairie, the fifteen team chose the wilderness as the path to check point two. The formation has returned to its initial form, Maya runs the front and Ef runs the back.
Walking in a tense condition makes time not feel running, they have been moving for 9 hours without rest. The sunlight entering the forest is getting less, the atmosphere is getting darker.
“We look for a place to rest!” Ef gave the command over the radio.
“Oh lord, thank goodness. I feel like my knee is almost gone!” Hamish sat down and took off his backpack. He also gulped the water until it was empty.
“I said we ‘akan’ rest, does not mean we will rest here!” Ef continues to walk past Hamish to catch up with Maya who is already far ahead. Lin who had stopped followed. Feeling like he was going to stay, Hamish again carried his backpack while grumbling.
“There are springs here!” Maya speaks on the radio.
“Alright, we rest there!”
They found a spring that made a small puddle from behind the rock. This time there were no caves or other places they could use to hide.
“We will rest here?” Hamish had just caught up with a gasp of breath.
“Yes, you guys get some rest. I'll set up a.” spot
While Ef was busy preparing their hiding place, Maya had bombarded Lin with questions about their radio that had died. Lin narrated all the scenes with enthusiasm and detail. Hamish and Maya repeatedly said ‘oh my God’ while covering her mouth.
In just a few minutes Ef had made an emergency dome by relying on a basin covered by two large stones adjacent. He had covered the gap with twigs and leaves, now that the basin was ready to become a hideout after Ef alpak really looked like a natural bush.
Before night, they light a small bonfire to warm up the food and finish all the wishes. After night they put out the fire and went into the basin.
Narrow gaps make them have to sit close together. For those of small stature like Lin and Maya can still sleep in a lying position.
It did not take long Hamish snoring was heard, Maya also no longer spoke. Lin curled up next to Ef who was sitting leaning against the rock. The man is still awake.
“Thank you for protecting me,” Lin whispered in English. It seemed that he did not want this conversation to be known by the other two colleagues.
Ef's ears heard the sound of Lin's movements inching to sit. The girl's hair felt tickle the left arm Ef.
“Are you still doing it for duty?”
Ef raised his left hand, and tried to feel Lin's head position.
“It seems this time not because of duty,” reply Ef while wiping Lin's head. Then he directed the girl to lie back down, only this time he positioned Lin's head to sleep on her lap.
