Lost in the Aokigahara Forest

While walking towards the road home, Sota sees a young woman, a foreigner not a Japanese citizen. The woman stood still. His hands were brushing his hair. The unusual sight made Sota afraid to see him and almost jump. The woman turned towards Sota and smiled. Sota smiled back and nodded his head at the woman, then continued his steps. Sota thought, what the woman did was an odd thing to do in the forest. Not long after, he felt a strange presence coming behind him. He had no time to react before he was lifted up and thrown into the ground covered in roots and moss. The blow rendered him unconscious, looking as if he had died. The Yurei* was apparently satisfied thinking he had killed Sota and he instantly disappeared.


Some time later, Yusa woke up feeling pain all over her body. Trudging he walked to find a way out, until he felt tired. He felt like he was circling in place, a way out he could not find. Suddenly from a distance he saw a monk walking in front of him. Yusa accelerated her steps closer towards the monk.


“Excuse Bhante (familiar greeting to monk)." Yusa ventured to greet the monk.


“Amida Nyorai (Buddha with unlimited light). What's up young.” Linking his right hand to his chest, his left hand is holding O-Juzu or O-Nenju (tasbih in Buddhism)**.


“Can you help me?”


The monk looked at Yusa from the top to the bottom of her body.


“Are you lost young man?”


“True Bhante.”


“Good. Follow me.” The monk walked slowly in front of Yusa. They passed through large, dense trees that were thousands of years old. Running non-stop, for almost an hour. Not long after, from a distance Yusa saw a highway stretching before her behind a lush forest. The monk stopped walking 10 meters from the side of the road.


“You've seen that road? I got here to take you. Live well young man. Amida Nyorai (Buddha with unlimited light).” Tossing his right hand to his chest while lowering his head.


“Thanks Bhante.” Yusa bowed her body. Then he stepped out of the monk. Just a few steps Yusa moved, her reflexes reversing her body. But Yusa did not find the monk who had helped her where she had left him.

Juzu is used differently for different schools of Buddhism, but one of the main uses is to count prayers or prostrations. It is also a symbol that serves to recognize someone who follows the path of Buddhism. Each school of Buddhism is its own type of Juzu. Small size for wrist and others large size. This tasbih can be made of bone, crystal, wood Bodhi tree, bamboo, coral or other materials. The number of these prayer beads varies but the most common is one hundred and eight. One hundred and eight represents one hundred and eight worldly desires.


Meaning of Juzu


Nichiren Shu Juzu has a hundred and eight tasbihs in a circle with five tassels, three on one side and two on the other. Other than a hundred and eight, there were some special prayer beads. Two large prayer beads represent Buddha Shakyamuni and Buddha Taho. The four smaller prayer beads in the main circle represent the four Bodhisattvas from below the realm. Juzu also represents the person. Tassels represent the head, arms and legs. It reminds us that we are made up of one hundred and eight desires.


There are several types of Juzu used by Nichiren Shu. These types are different. First, it is used by lay followers and has five tassels with balls each end. Second, it was used by priests and had lace with tassels over the ball at the ends. Third, it has tassels like the first, but it is longer. The third type is used by priests who perform special blessings, called Kito blessings.
