Residents around give the nickname Jukai (forest of trees) for Aokigahara forest. When viewed from a height when blown by the wind, Aokigahara forest looks like a wave wave. The forest, located in the Northwest of Mount Fuji, stretches from the city of Kawaguchiko to the village of Narizawa, Yamanashi Prefecture. This forest is second only to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as the location of suicide with the most victims. Since 1988, an estimated 100 people have died in the forest each year. It was triggered by the appearance of Tower of Waves, a novel by Seicho Matsumoto published in 1961 containing the suicide of lovers in the Aokigahara Forest. Another book, The Complete Manual of Suicide (1993) by Wataru Tsurumi, describes Aokigahara as "the perfect place to die".

Aokigahara is believed to be haunted because in the 19th century this place was used for the disposal of old people to be left to die of hunger. This ritual is called ubasute and is commonly performed when the community suffers from poverty and hunger. The evil spirit (yurei) that resides in the forest is believed to create hallucinations, lead to heresy and can strengthen those who are worried to be sure of their decision to commit suicide.

Yusa enters the forest deeper. About a kilometer from the cave, is an unspoiled part of the forest. It passed through a skull and several bodies that began to rot, hanging on a large tree. The hanging rope, and the pill bottle, showed how they killed themselves. The remains of shoes, clothes, and relics of people who have died were scattered at several points. Many ropes or tape are attached to trees, to mark the streets that have been passed if those who want to kill themselves do not do so.
