8. Engagement
At Devano's request, Karina tries to arrange a meeting between her sister and Kenan.
Without her expectation, the man who would soon become her husband was so easy to accept her request. Kenan immediately agreed to Karina's request to introduce her to Devano.
“dia your sister that means she will also be my sister-in-law.” He said as he agreed to Karina's request.
There is a sense of pleasure in Karina when she sees Kenan know how to appreciate the only Karina family. The two met at a cafe near the Devano campus two days before their engagement.
Devano examined Kenan's appearance from head to toe. Then he brought his body closer to the table and looked at Kenan from a closer distance.
“why do you want to marry my sister?”
“do I have to answer?”
“of course, your answer determines whether your marriage will take place or cancel.”
“though in fact it has no effect, but I will answer it.” Kenan's words made Devano slightly furrow her brows.
Her sister-in-law candidate turned out to be very confident that she could get blessing from him no matter what.
“I love her, isn't that enough?”
“but you can't feed my sister with just love.”
Kenan kept silent for a while and then took out his business card. At first he thought that Devano already knew his background, but it seemed that the man did not know anything.
“you hotel owner?”
“iya.”
“no, you can't marry my sister. You are too different.”
Kenan felt incomprehensible to the thoughts of the man in front of him. He was a rich man and not only capitalized on the word love, but even the rejection he got.
“but you don't have the right to determine my marriage, Karina has already agreed to it.”
“what do you offer to my sister?”
“you think your brother is such a person?”
Kenan throws a question that can make Devano immediately silent. Her brother couldn't possibly get married just because he was offered something, he knew his brother had high self-esteem.
“this is too difficult for people like us, you are too different and my brother will definitely get hurt later.”
“makes him hurt not in my promise to him.”
After saying that sentence, Kenan stood up and was about to leave because he thought this meeting with the prospective sister-in-law was enough. He did not need to spend more time there because it was useless in the future. The marriage they are going to have is a contractual relationship.
“please.”
Kenan's footsteps came to a halt upon hearing Devano's request.
“my brother has suffered too long, if later you do not want him anymore, please return him to me without hurting him.”
Kenan turned his face away without answering Devano's request. There was a complicated feeling in his heart upon hearing such a request coming to him.
The engagement day finally arrived. This engagement was only attended by the nuclear family and some important guests. Karina is only accompanied by Devano without her uncle's family. He still hasn't told his aunt and uncle about his marriage. Karina is worried that her uncle and aunt will make it difficult for the Kenan family if they find out that they are rich.
The engagement went well, after which everyone enjoyed a simple party that was already prepared. Karina and Kena received congratulations from several invited guests from the Kenan family. He was also introduced to some of Kenan's colleagues who looked like important people.
“halo nak Devano, this is our first meeting huh?”
“hello tanten, om.” Devano greeted Kenan's parents politely.
“we didn't know that Karina had a handsome sister like you.”
“tante too much praise me.”
“what is only you his family?”
Devano silently weighed what sentence he should throw in response.
“we have uncle, but I forbid brother to invite him.” Devano.
“why?”
“same as the story of Cinderella.” Devano said the sentence spontaneously when he saw his brother greeting guests along with Kenan.
Kenan's parents looked at each other. It managed to trigger the curiosity that they previously pendam. They wanted to slowly get to know her daughter-in-law, but seemed to know her sooner than anyone else. There's too much they don't know about Karina's life.
The engagement ended when it was late night. Devano had already returned first because the gate of his campus dormitory was closed at ten p.m. Meanwhile, Karina had already fallen asleep in the guest room before removing the makeup and changing her clothes.
He intended to lay down his body for a while because his pocket felt like it was almost broken. But he just fell asleep. Karina woke up as the sound of knocking on the door sounded faintly in her ears. With a shunt step, he opened the door and saw Kenan standing in front of the door.
“ada what?”
“you haven't cleaned?”
Karina glanced at her appearance which was still the same as before.
“slumber.”
“ini.” Kenan held out a map containing documents to Karina.
Karina simply raised her brow next to him without any intention of grabbing the map.
“after night, can't we discuss anything else tomorrow morning?”
“I'm not here to discuss work but to give this to you.”
“what is this?”
“just consider your down payment before the wedding.”
“what does it mean?”
“I'll explain it tomorrow morning because it's late. Please rest.” Kenan returned the words Karina had said to him.
Karina went back into the room and threw the map on the bed and rushed to the bathroom to wash her face. She breathed a sigh of relief after replacing her dress with a t-shirt and pants on her knees. When she was about to lay her body on the mattress, Karina glanced at the document and stored it in the closet. He was not interested in what Kenan had just given him.
“I'll take care of it tomorrow.” He muttered and went back to sleep.
The next day, Karina woke up at five in the morning automatically due to her habit since childhood. Karina rubbed her eyes which were still heavy and then moved to the bathroom. After feeling refreshed, Karina walked out of the room towards the kitchen.
Some people were seen pacing back and forth in the kitchen. They automatically stopped the work that was being done when they saw Karina entering the kitchen area.
“good morning miss.”
“pa.gi.” Karina felt awkward about their treatment of her.
“ada what miss needs?”
“what are you doing?” karina asked as she drew closer to the servants.
“we are preparing breakfast because the big master always breakfast at six in the morning.”
“as of it?”
“already a habit in this house because the big master the person is very busy.”
Karina nodded her head in understanding then moved closer towards the food cooler. He checked the ingredients available in it and smiled happily. Karina tied up her hair and started removing food from the refrigerator.
“eh, what is miss doing?”
“what big master has a special menu to prepare?”
“ti..dak no.”
“then let me cook.”
“but miss.”
“don't worry, I'm good at cooking.”
“not so, but it's our job.”
“I want to cook for my in-laws, is that not allowed?”
“no, please miss. We will help miss.”
“no need, I can alone. You guys just rest.”
Karina began to wash the ingredients she found and cut them. His hands are so good at cooking because it has become a routine since he was young. Fragrant food pouring out of the pan filled every corner of the kitchen.
With a slight humming, Karina began to pour her food onto the plate then arrange it on the dining table. He smiled at his own work.
“what are you doing in the kitchen this early in the morning?”
“eh aunty.”
“call mom dong, aunty time continues.”
“ibu.”
“wahh you cooked this all?”
“iya tan, uh bu.”
“the money is good, I think it tastes good too.”
“dtry first bu.”
“when it is still early in the morning, you should just rest in the room.”
“I want to cook for mom and dad.”
The middle-aged woman looked at Karina with a shady look then pulled the chair beside her and asked Karina to sit down. He took the rice and side dishes on the plate and placed them in front of Karina.
“eat, accompany mom eat. Same father Kenan is now still sleeping, they seem exhausted.”
“who said dad slept? Where can sleep if there is such a delicious aroma from the kitchen.” Said Kenan's father who suddenly appeared in the dining room with a distinctive appearance just woke up.
“tumben this aroma of cooking is very fragrant as usual.”
“Karina the cook.” Sahut the wife.
Not long after, Kenan followed them to the dining room and had breakfast together. At that place, Karina felt the warmth of a family she had never felt before.
Karina so knowing the cold nature of Kenan is not only when outside the house but also when at home with her parents. No smiles or words came out of Kenan's lips. Karina suddenly remembered Devano, if only her sister were here as well, she would be happy to feel this kind of family.
Suddenly Karina felt her head dizzy making her appetite disappear.
“why nak?” kenan's mother asked when she saw Karina holding her head.
“only fatigue, after a short break also healed.”
“ya you have rested.”
Karina smiled awkwardly and then moved from the dining table to the guest room she was in. It had been a long time since he often felt dizzy and nauseous. The first time, he had a chance to see a doctor and it turned out that it was only because the stomach acid rose.
Karina has had an uncontrolled lifestyle since childhood. Eat leftovers from his uncle and often do not eat because of the rations he gave to his sister. Working hard to help the aunt besides she had to excel at school in order to get a scholarship. In addition to unhealthy lifestyle, doctors say that excessive stress can also affect his health condition.
Since then, Karina has never checked herself again to the doctor because she thinks the cause must be the same, namely lifestyle and stress. There was no point in going to the doctor because his life could not be changed. Plus now he only has one year outside the family restraints of the aunt.
If in this one year he could not have his own life, then he had to return to a house that was like hell for him.
