The war between Pajang forces against Arya Panangsang occurred near Bengawan Sore. Thanks to a clever strategy compiled by Ki Ageng Uncleahan, Arya Panangsang managed to spill through the hands of Danang Sutawijaya.
Ki Ageng Pamanahan pledged allegiance to Sultan Hadiwijaya who gave him permission to establish a fiefland (duchy) in Mentaok which was then the southern part of Pajang.
After Ki Ageng Pemanahan died, a messenger from Pajang came to Mataram to ask for the loyalty of Danang Sutawijaya. However, by then he had prepared to break away from the Kingdom of Pajang. Mataram and the Kingdom of Pajang also had to fight to force Sultan Hadiwijaya to retreat.
After the war, Sultan Hadiwijaya became ill and died in 1582. So that the efforts of Danang Sutawijaya to liberate Mataram was even easier, especially the Kingdom of Pajang experienced upheaval due to the power struggle.
In 1586, Senopati officially appointed himself as the first king of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom with the title of Panembahan Senapati Ing Alaga Sayidin Panatagama. His title meant that the king ruled over government and religion. While the title of new sultan was officially used by the ruler of Mataram starting in 1641, in the reign of his grandson, Sultan Agung.
In 1587, Prince Benawa, who ruled Pajang Kingdom, requested that his kingdom join Mataram. Since then, Pajang became a subordinate area of Mataram led by Prince Gagak Baning, the younger brother of Danang Sutawijaya, as duke.
During his reign, Danang Sutawijaya began to expand the territory of Islamic Mataram to the region around him. Efforts to conquer the region continued to reach the northern coastal area and East Java. After Demak, Kedu, and Bagelen were successfully controlled, Madiun, Surabaya, Kediri, and Pasuruan also submitted to Mataram.
Under his rule, the Mataram Sultanate was known as an agrarian-patterned kingdom with the capital located in Kotagede, Yogyakarta. In addition, he also made the religion of Islam as the basis of his governance. The reign of Danang Sutawijaya can be said to be the beginning of the revival of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom.
The death of Danang Sutawijaya is told in the Babad Sangkala, which is in 1601. He Died while in Kajenar Village, then buried in Mataram Marketan complex, Kotagede. After that, the throne of Mataram passed to his son, Mas Jolang who holds the title as Panembahan Hanyokrowati.
