Chapter 25: Locke and Els (4)

Calisto Hill is located on the border of the Falik Plain and is connected to the Tedanini Mountains. It was also in the area between the Dwarven Kingdom and the Forde Trade Union. According to an old legend, the Magi left in the end times of magical civilizations open a dimensional portal and send other living beings in the Grindia Continent to different worlds to ensure that humans will survive the impending misery and no need to compete with other races. However, for some reason, they lost the dwarves who had been living around the Tedanini Mountains and slowly, by passing two thousand years, they had built their own kingdom.

Currently, this was the only other creature in the Grindia Continent that was separate from humans. However, given the tendency of the dwarves to live in the mountains, conflicts with humans are rare and even based on trade requirements.

While the Calisto Mountains are technically in the Forde Trade Union area, unions do not have much governmental power in the area. Given the battle-crazed nature of the mountain folk, the unions stepped carefully and carefully not to offend them in the slightest, lest large-scale conflicts erupt. Currently, the council is considering breaking up the Calisto Mountains into several districts in the future and letting those who have contributed to the union govern it.

After three days and two nights of travel, Lorist and the gang finally arrived at their destination, Read Village. The middle-aged village chief who was also the applicant and the owner of the mine, Bam, welcomed them.

Bam was also one of Lorist's senior students in the academy. With his father who had enlisted in the trade union army to fend off the invasion of the Krissen Empire, he retires to the village due to injury and decides to make the village prosperous after seeing all the progress made in the outside world and barely exist. Bam follows two additional professional courses, namely resource foraging and mine management. However, given that the courses were somewhat unpopular and the substandard quality of his lecturers, he only managed to learn those things in theory and never gained practical experience. The Academy then discontinued the courses.

After returning to the village, Bam spent five to six years developing the skills he had learned and managed to find some silver veins and lead ore in a hill near the village. While the number of excavations was not very large, it was enough to support the livelihoods of six other villages in the vicinity. The discovery of the mine eliminated poverty and hunger from the surrounding villages. In addition, Bam also used a portion of the profits from the ore mines to fund some talented youngsters to go to Morante City for further study.

The entire gang feels that Senior Bam is quite impressive due to his willingness to abandon the possibility of a luxurious lifestyle in Morante City in order to develop his village and his community. Yuriy and Lorist were very impressed with how he used the extra money to sponsor the village youths because they understood that the cost of studying in Morante City was not cheap.

To be honest, Bam told them about how he first discovered traces of Metal-Eating Rats around the mine. Being an Iron-ranked swordsman, he formed a group to treat pests. It was not until a while later that they discovered that the attack was not as simple as they had thought and over the past year, they had killed over ten rats on various occasions. Just two months ago, an attack by a group of Metal-Eating Rats had killed three and injured five miners. It was then that he finally decided to end it once and for all and summoned all the villagers who had Battle Power to go on an extermination mission in the mine; including Bam, the, there were three Iron rank fighters and eleven Bronze rank fighters in total.

However, the extermination was unsuccessful because the rat horde numbered over a hundred and the group of 14 people were in trouble and none of them escaped unscathed. Although they managed to exterminate 30 or so rats, they had struggled to retreat under the relentless assault of the rat horde and nine of them ended up with rather severe injuries.

Due to that failed attempt, Bam understood the magnitude of the problem and had no choice but to seek help from the mercenaries. After taking care of all the wounded, the village was only left with less than 30 gold coins and the dire financial difficulties were further compounded by the temporary closure of the mine. Being only able to offer ten or more gold coins as mission rewards, and being given a referral fee of five gold coins charged by the mercenary guild, most of the mercenaries were hesitant to take on missions.

Given that the students of Dawn Academy often carried out mercenary missions, he reached out to the villagers who were studying there and managed to contact Charade.

After listening to Bam's description of the situation, the party is convinced that this mission has a relatively low risk because Bam is a rather credible person. Charade went on to inform them of the situation at hand: there were estimated to be two to three hundred Metal-Eating Rats. With their troops of three Silver rank and two Iron rank, even if they could not wipe out all the rats, the, it shouldn't be a problem for them to take out the rat queen and cause the rat to leave the mine.

While the reward of 18 gold coins for rat extermination was a little less, it was already somewhat advantageous for Charade's side as Bam would also bring along two other Bronze Sword Swordsmen to guide them in the mine as well as manage their equipment at no extra cost. The most advantageous point of this mission is that any loot or profit earned during the mission is solely the property of the party. There might be the possibility of finding gold nuggets and other rare metals inside the rat's nest that could be sold for a considerable amount. The party decided to rest for the day before leaving tomorrow.

“Although Metal-Eating Rat meat is slightly acidic, it is undoubtedly safe to consume and will taste better if made into jerks. The organs and blood of the mice, however, had to be removed completely because of the high concentration of toxic minerals present in them. The most threatening feature of rats is their front teeth that are completely durable and can be sold for a small silver one on the market. However their skin is worthless as it has a foul odor that attracts insects that cannot be removed no matter how it is treated, so they are usually discarded. ”

Inside the mine, Els was assigned the role of scout and vanguard while Charade, Yuriy and Terman were positioned in the middle and Lorist, Bam and two other swordsmen formed the rearguard. Right now, Lorist was telling Bam what he had learned about the rats from the magical beast biology lesson.

"Metal-eating mice hate the smell of pine trees, especially from their roots. The potion we sprayed around the entrance was to limit the range of activity of the mice and prevent them from running all over the place.

“This is the result of a study completed last year by Professor Snade Borg from our department of animal biology. He even rewarded 20,000 gold Ford for this. As long as you use this pesticide regularly at the entrance of the mine, you will be free from the attacks of Metal-Eating Rats.

“That's most important, it's not expensive at all. A large bucket only costs about 3 gold Ford and can last for a month. After using this for a year or two, a natural pine scent will form around the mine and you will not have to use it anymore. Senior Bam, please consider this quickly as our supplies are limited. You can only get this from the academy insiders so please make your order with us. ”

Lorist was really enthusiastic about promoting the pesticide as he stood up to get one gold Forde for every bucket sold. If he managed to sell 12 buckets per year, that would mean an additional 12 Ford gold earnings for him each year without breaking a sweat.

As they descended further into the mines, they swept away two waves of rats along the way, which numbered about 200 of them. The team's performance and efficacy greatly impressed Bam and the bronze swordsmen that followed.

With Charade, Els and Terman standing at three points around him with him in the middle, Yuriy proved to be quite capable of supporting the team and letting the rest slaughter the rats without worry. Lorist himself was even more amazing; he moved separately from the others and easily took care of as many rats as he had in the formation himself without any bloodstains on him.

Senior Bam and his aides were embarrassed at the fact that nine out of their fourteen groups had sustained severe injuries to their previous extermination efforts after seeing how Lorist's group had killed rats easily and without effort, it was as if it was just a joint exercise.

After killing the remaining rats in the second wave, the party decided to rest for a while as they took out the valuable parts of the mice that could be sold for money. Yuriy took out a large tang and used it to pull out the front teeth of all the mice. After being told by Lorist that the rat's meat was edible, Bam asked the group to give the meat to them to help address the food shortage problem in their village.

After resting and eating the dry rations, Charade instructed the group to split up and led Terman and Yuriy to the left cave while Lorist and Els headed for the right one. Since most of the mice had been exterminated, all that was left was to take care of the rat queen.

Carrying a bag containing rat teeth on his back, Lorist casually smeared some pesticides on the cave walls as he walked along the road.

"What are you doing?" Ask Els.

Lorist responded by telling Els about the pesticide's impact half-heartedly given that Els would not be interested in buying it from him. However, Els doubted the effectiveness of pesticides and they argued.

After walking for a long time and reaching the end of the road, they did not find any more rats. Els said, “Come back. There's no point in staying here. ”

Just as he finished his words, the stone wall in front of him suddenly jolted and broke with a loud sound. A huge beast head emerged from the hole in the wall, inhaling the surrounding air and leaping towards Lorist and Els.

"What is that !?" lorist exclaimed in shock as he dropped the torch in his hand. “Isn't this guy a little too big? The head itself has a diameter of two meters! "

"Better run!" Said Els loudly as she grabbed Lorist's arm and turned to run in the other direction.

"Sol, I know that taking you along is a bad call! The last two times have been bad enough. For this entire mission, I was worried that something bad would happen. I can finally stop guessing, now that this creature has appeared in the middle of a rat extermination mission .. "call Lorist as he runs behind Els.

“You haven't even thanked me for saving you! If I was a little late, you would have already been swallowed by now! You even dropped our torches! ”Els Wagner.

“I suddenly remembered the single-horned Rock Python that supposedly lived in the mine. That thing over there must have had a long body and a huge head! If it's not python, I don't know what it is! ”Said Lorist, a little embarrassed at the fact that he had indeed been saved by Els' quick thinking.

"How can you see in this darkness? Do I look like a little kid who will fall in love with your lies? And hey, don't run so fast! What if we hit a wall !? ”yelling Lorist.

"Haha," Els laughed lightly. “You know that I am training in the darkness attribute of Battle Force, right? I'm sure you didn't know that people trained in such a War Force had night vision. I can see just as well in the dark as I do in broad daylight! That's my special ability! How's it? Are you envious? I can still see well even without the torch you dropped. ”

"Good Sol, I have enough money to buy all the torches I need. I don't need that shitty ability! ”Feeling somewhat envious, thought Lorist, this person's ability to be able to see in the dark is in no way inferior to my own dynamic vision …

"Then I bet you enjoyed the view at the bath on that day. Although the lighting there is very bad, I'm sure you can see everything very clearly given your ability, ” Lorist said while panting.

“Can you not talk about it anymore? I was facing the wall at that time and could not see any of them .. ”Persis when Lorist reminded him of the incident, Els recalled the cruel and condescending statement from the girl that severely hurt her pride and stumbled upon a lump of stone, as she lost focus.

Lorist quickly helped Els up. "Eh? Locke, are you hurt? Why are your clothes wet? ”

Stunned, Lorist felt his body rise and said, “Oh, it's not blood. The skin that was holding back the pesticide exploded and released all of its contents into my body. That autumn didn't hurt you, did it? We better hurry up, I start hearing it approaching. ”

"I'm fine . Let's go . ”

In a short time, they returned to their former resting place where Charade and the others were waiting. Looking at Lorist and Els's faint gazes, they laughed out loud until they heard a rumble coming from the tunnel behind them and started running towards the cave exit for their lives.

Despite having a stocky body, Charade is the fastest among them all and escapes from the caves and is followed by Yuriy, Terman, Bam and one of the Bronze Swordsman with Lorist and Els followed at the end. The other Bronze-ranked aides who were flapping rat carcasses onto the cart outside the mine looked at their panicked expressions in astonishment. What happened in the mine when he left?

Charade shouted, "Side! A magical beast came out from the entrance! "

It instantly made the entire group panic. Fortunately, the beast retreated to the mine as if afraid of the strong sunlight.

Sighing in relief, Charade asked Lorist and Els what happened. "What was that? How did you finally find that? And, what does that smell to you, Locke? Is your bladder sagging? ”

Lorist explained, “No, the pesticide was spreading all over my body. It was developed by professor Snade Borg. I brought up a few reasons I heard that we were going to eradicate the Metal-Eating Rats. ”

“Sol Nice! Let me see that pesticide! I think I know what the monster is in there! ”Charade said as he walked towards Lorist angrily, seemingly wanting to give him a blow or two.

“Wait, what's up? Isn't it a good idea to bring pesticides to Metal-Eating Rats? ”Ask Lorist while avoiding that fat blow.

“Good idea, my ass! Although the potion could indeed repel the Metal-Eating Rats, it would also attract Ground Wyrms! The thing behind there was Ground Wyrm who was captivated by the scent of that pesticide!

"Do you know how serious it is? The Earth Wyrms were a miraculous version of ordinary earthworms and they were attracted by the scent of pine tree roots! If you don't believe me, try digging up the roots of a pine tree and see if you find an earthworm nest there! There are even people in the academy who use that 'pesticide' of yours as Ground Wyrm bait!

"The professor even lost the 20,000 gold Ford had given him after they learned about the unintended effects and caused many of the remaining pesticides to be stored in the academy, you don't know? Sol, only an idiot like you would fall in love with his plan! ”Shouted Charade with a long breath.

Good Sol, no wonder the professor said that he would give me one gold coin for every bucket sold! So, it's a broken product! Holding his head and curled up on the ground, Lorist simply said, “All of you, please hit me until satisfied. I deserve this. ”

But no one went to hit him and just calmed down to find out how they were going to solve the problem at hand. Compared to other magical beasts, Ground Wyrm was not too difficult to take care of. They decided to lure him with hooks and large ropes after some discussion.

Ground Wyrm was basically an oversized earthworm; it hated sunlight and water and was considered relatively harmless to most other magical beasts. It did not pose much of a threat to small, agile targets given its large, imposing body and slow speed. Charade and his entourage spent six full days working with the villagers of Baca to collect a hundred-meter-long rope with a large hook at the end and send Lorist down the mine with a hook to make up for his mistake.

Before he left, Els walked over from the crowd. Lorist asked, "Are you going to do it for me?"

“I'll accompany you there. If Yuriy and Terman are not assigned to hold the rope by Charade, they will accompany you as well. We're friends, aren't we? ”

It was at that moment that Lorist cried.

They put the hooks after walking some distance into the mine and wrapped them in a bundle of cloth soaked in 'pesticides'. Without much delay, rumbling sounds rang out from the depths of the cave and the two of them dashed out at full speed.

On the way to the exit, the rope jolted upwards tightly. Lorist said cheerfully, "That's addictive!"

Outside the mine, Charade directed the villagers to pull the rope with all their strength. Even after breaking their backs all afternoon, Ground Wyrm refused to come out. After the final wave, the people present watched the blood splash out from the entrance of the mine as the inside of the Wyrm Ground was pulled out of its carcass.

Looking at the scene with a hint of satisfaction, Charade said, "Not bad, given how internally pulled out, that the Wyrm Ground must have died. We'll harvest the skins tomorrow. ”

Given the incredible regenerative abilities of Ground Wyrms, the only method to eliminate them was to use a hook to pull out internally. While the rest of the savage beast was not worth much, its skin could be boiled to extract a strong adhesive that could be mixed with sand to form a sturdy building material.

In order to correct Lorist's mistake, Charade gave the skin to Bam, very pleasant, as he was able to create a new home for the villagers with the Wyrm Ground skin.

After spending three days clearing the mines from the remaining Metal-Eating Rats, the group placed one of the small cages they carried around the mine entrance and with the corpse of a rat inside. The decomposing bodies would serve as an effective deterrent to other Metal-Eating Rats and keep them away from the mines.

After finishing the entire affair, the gang bid farewell to Senior Bam and began their journey back to the city.
