Chapter 24: Locke and Els (3)
The sky looked extremely clear with the sun emitting its light high in the sky as if it was foretelling the pleasant weather of the rest of the day.
It was the holiday season for the academy and Charade took on a personal request that required Lorist to go all over the place for three whole days to finally get the things they needed for the mission. These items were special trap cages that were usually used against small magical beasts. Right now, Lorist and Yuriy were piling stables on top of a large four-wheeled horse carriage.
Yuriy is a student of Dawn Academy and also an assistant instructor for their horse riding course with Battle Force rank from Two Star Iron. Like Lorist, he worked and studied part-time and often joined forces with other mercenaries to receive low-level missions for an additional sum of money.
After loading all 14 stables onto the carriage and tying it with a long rope, Lorist checked everything they had to carry with them once again to ensure that he did not lose anything. After finishing all the checks, he took out a skin and drank a few gulps and patiently waited for Charade to come.
Personal requests differ from normal mercenary missions in that requests are often not processed by the mercenary union and are negotiated privately between the applicant and the receiving party. Although this allowed one to avoid paying the reference fee to the mercenary guild, it was not without risk. It was unusual for events such as sudden mission cancellations, denial of payment or even threats of violence to avoid payment to occur. But the fees collected by mercenary unions are often rather high, sometimes even up to 40% of wages. If the reward was favorable, certain mercenaries would choose to negotiate the request personally rather than having the guild act as the go-between.
"Hey, Locke, brother, what are you doing?" Els asked as she walked over, wearing a large coat and confining the wagon and carriage with a curious look. "Oh, you're going on another mission, right?"
Lorist felt dizzy because the arrival of Els twice when he met her had caused him to suffer greatly. During the first time they met, he lost quite a lot of money. While Lorist admitted that he was partly guilty of it, he believed that if Els had not stuck to him for so long, he would have been able to return to his room earlier and might have been able to catch the thieving woman. give up and stop him in time. However, their second meeting ended badly even though all Lorist did was lend him his coat. The part that angered him the most was the fact that he had been hit by normal, non-combatant civilians without being able to fight back in fear that he would critically injure them unintentionally.
The two encounters left a deep impression that Els became the bearer of bad luck in Lorist's heart. Lorist made a mental note just in case he did not get involved in the more troublesome business.
Els was unaware of how Lorist felt about her and even believed that they were already close friends of the judged by the way he intimately referred to Lorist as his 'brother'. Looking at the preparations Lorist made, he thought that he would offer some advice as his 'senior'.
“Hey, I said, Lorist, there is no point in chasing such a small magical beast. As a mercenary, you should set your sights even further! Have you ever thought about venturing into places like the Magical Beast Forest in the Sunset Mountains, the Doomsday Beach of the Jigda Kingdom or even the Underground Cave of Urubaha? Although these places are much more dangerous without question, you will get more benefits from those places. Didn't you hear about the Unicorn Mercenary Corps successfully returning from the expedition to the Magical Beast Forest? They actually made a killing from that trip; all the members got 100 gold Ford, ”celoteh Els, occasionally drooling from her mouth as she spoke.
Lorist rolled his eyes when he heard the name Els one dangerous place after another, as he thought, you want an Iron ranked mercenary like me to be the dinner of a ferocious wild beast !? And I'm sure you didn't hear the full story about the Unicorn Corps either. Of the 125 Silver-ranked people in their group who went to the Magical Beast Forest, only 43 came back alive a month later! The captain and vice-captain, who were Gold-ranked experts, even cried in the halls of the mercenary guild like a child after making their mission report!
“How can you have free time to walk like this with your position as syndicate boss? What will you know about our mercenary problem? ”Stir Lorist without holding back in the least.
"Heh, I bet your attitude would be different if you knew that I myself was actually a mercenary, a silver ranker at that," said Els while casually taking out the Silver rank mercenary badge and sticking it on her chest.
"Eh? Why would a syndicate boss like you need a Silver rank mercenary badge? It's not like you're going to use it, "asked Lorist.
“He got his Besi ranking badge when he was still in the academy taking missions from time to time. He got Silver rank one from the mercenary guild after he became the syndicate boss, ” Charade replied.
Turning his head towards Charade, Lorist saw that he had returned with Terman and the two horses.
Terman was a member of the Enforcement Division with a rank of One Silver Star and was also one of Lorist's good friends in the academy.
Pointing at Els and turning his head towards Terman and Yuriy, Charade said, “Friend, this is Brennan Evanport. He's an alumnus of Dawn Academy as well as your senior. He used to be my classmate in the past, but he graduated early to take the position of syndicate boss. ”
“It's nice to meet you, I'm Yuwen Ridest. Just call me Yuriy. ”
"Good day, I'm Waprey Terman. ”
Els nodded at the two of them and asked curiously, "Fatty, where are you going on this mission?"
"We're going to Calisto Hills to exterminate some Metal-Eating Rats. ”
Metal-eating mice are, as the name suggests, mice whose diet consists primarily of metal. With their size rivaling that of most dogs, they are classed as small magical beasts that live in herds at the lower levels of the mine. Despite its small size, the Metal-Eating Rats were notorious for attacking endlessly until their last breath was once agitated. After meeting with one of them, one should calm down and look as threatening as possible and slowly retreat to a safe distance. However, anyone who possessed the Battle Star One Star Bronze rank could easily dispatch a lone Metal-eating Rat. However, most of the time rats often appear in groups and rely on their numbers to gang up on their enemies.
After taking the magical beast biology course offered by his academy, Lorist understood that Metal-eating Rats were far and few and would only wander from their group during the breeding season. Legend has it that the first magical beast that the first man, who miraculously resurrected the long-lost Battle Force in his blood, had been revealed was a lone Metal-Eating Rat. Had he faced the swarm of creatures, he would have perished and who knows how many more years man would have had to suffer during the dark times.
Given that the Metal-Eating Rats were fed by many other dangerous magical beasts, they should be eradicated as soon as they were discovered because if the number of mice grew, the number of rats would increase, that would attract the presence of more fearsome predators to the mine that fell prey to the rats and bring further disaster to the mining operation there. One way to get rid of them is to hunt down all the Metal-Eating Queens so that the rest of the herd will leave the area.
One of the more well-known mining incidents that has been documented occurred at one of the Roman Empire's gold mines. As a result of not adequately managing the crisis of the Metal-Eating Rats, two gigantic Single Horned Stone Python made the mine their home and caused over 3000 deaths. In the end, the imperial government had to send a team of over 60 Gold-ranked experts led by Sword Saint to handle the situation, but it was not without a price: the team members had suffered quite a number of casualties as well. The aftermath is that more than 40 noble houses assigned as miners have been severely punished and released from their ranks. Following the incident, mining operations across the continent have always been very wary of the possibility of a metal-eating rat attack and made sure to get rid of the problem before it gets worse.
"Why aren't Steve and the others here?" Ask Lorist.
“Huh, did you know about the nature drawing trip that the art second graders held? Steve brought the Kell brothers to serve as their caretakers. That's right, he thinks that going on a trip to protect some beautiful women is more important than clearing up an infestation with us ” Charade said in a frustrated tone. He had put in so much effort to prepare the necessary equipment they would need for the mission but he had forgotten to invite enough people to join them.
Surprised, Charade said, “Why do you want to come? Aren't you okay and cool being the syndicate boss and so on? You don't have to go on an adventure with us. Moreover, this is a personal request, so the risks involved are much higher. ”
Lorist directly refused, “Don't joke, Charade. Lord Syndicate Boss over there just wants to go to places like the Magical Beast Forest and Doomsday Coast, there is no way he wants to exterminate some little mice with us in some mines! He's just kidding. ”
Els immediately replied in a serious tone, “I'm not kidding, man. To be honest, Charade there knew that I did not accept the position of syndicate boss because I wanted to. My son who forced me to take the post, I really couldn't help it. Since they handled all the work for me, I was a bit bored recently without much to do. So, I think it's a good idea to join you on this expedition! How much I miss the days when I wandered with my schoolmates. Charade, you've known me for years, so you should be able to tell what kind of person I am. Let me come, I will gladly make up for your lack of energy! I believe I can protect myself quite well given my abilities. ”
"This ..." murmured Charade doubtfully.
"No way," Lorist said firmly. If we let this catastrophic magnet join us, it is better for us to laze around at home rather than have to bear the consequences!
“Fatty, you know the type of Battle Force I trained and my unique skill. I will be a help for you guys in the mine, ”persuade Els.
Huh huh? What skills is he talking about? Lorist's curiosity awoke.
"Locke, why do you mind if he joins us?" Ask Charade.
"I ..." Lorist could not say that Els brought bad luck just because of one or two meetings. “We've never done a mission with him, so I'm worried about our compatibility. ”
Realizing that he was thinking of a convincing reason, Lorist wiped the sweat on his face.
"I will definitely follow all the orders" Els said.
"You promise?" Ask Charade.
"Appointment . ”
“Alright, welcome to the gang. I, Charade, will be the leader of this party. Go make your preparations and get back here in half an hour. This trip to Calisto Hill will take about twenty days, you agree with that, right? ”Kata Charade's.
"No problem . Mm, chubby— I mean, leader, I thought it would be better for us to meet at the Red Grace Inn before we left. We often get customers who make personal requests there and maybe I can ask my uncle to check if your client has a credible background before we leave. Maybe we can even accept certain requests that can be fulfilled on the way to the mine. Just tell my uncle that I sent you there, he'll know about it once he sees Locke, ” said Els who had already offered considerable help at the party when he joined.
Charade was moved. He was unaware that the Red Grace Inn was secretly handling personal requests like this right under the nose of the mercenary guild. Then again, it was a pretty good operation for the mercenaries, though, because receiving a mission from an inn usually has much less risk because the owner will not guarantee people they do not know well.
"Alright then, we'll gather at the Red Grace Inn. ”
Even before Charade opened his mouth, when the innkeeper saw Lorist and heard that they were about to make a trip, the innkeeper looked at Lorist and heard that they were going to make a trip, he took out a notebook that recorded the requests of many other clients and looked for some that Lorist's side could complete along the way .
After looking at the contents of the notebook, Charade noticed that most of the requests were just simple tasks and 'things to buy'. If these were sent to a mercenary guild, they would usually be taken by Bronze or Iron ranked mercenaries. Given the cost of the guild, nothing was profitable and not many mercenaries would go out of their way to work on that mission. However, if this request was made at the inn, people would be more willing to take it as they would get a sufficient amount without paying any additional fees.
After discussing with his team, Charade decided to take on 17 side missions that would give each of them an additional income. Charlando also mentioned that although the pay was not that high, the numbers were quite high and he often had trouble getting trusted mercenaries willing to do so. If the party could accomplish this without a hitch, he said that they would be welcomed to come for more missions in the future.
Els then came wearing a new Fire Salamander leather suit. The Fire Salamander has strange qualities of keeping one's body warm as well as repelling insects and is perfect for underground travel. However, the price of the materials was rather high and not something that most adventurers and mercenaries could afford. On the leather armor was the badge of a Silver rank mercenary.
Els loudly introduced her new party members to the inn customers as if she was afraid they would not realize that she was going on a mission. Lorist found it strange that Uncle Els did not mind the fact that his nephew would join their party and even treat all party members with a cup of blackcurrant beer while wishing them luck in their mission.
Finally leaving the city gate, Charade approached the wagon on horseback and asked Els, who was talking to Lorist, something, “Why is your uncle so easy to trust Locke? He immediately took out a request notebook as Locke showed his face. ”
Lorist found this passage also strange as he had only met Charlando twice, with their first encounter even ending with them fighting. Why did the old man treat him so well?
Glancing at Lorist lazily, Els said unenthusiastically, "The old man said that Locke was a person of good character, considering how foolish he was to protect the thieving woman once because of his sense of justice. He also did not withstand the blows from the crowd of ordinary people at any other time and would rather bear their blows than risk accidentally injuring them. My uncle said that such a person was rare and even asked me to learn from his behavior. What he didn't notice was how I, a Silver-ranked fighter, would rather escape from the horde than just defeat them from the start. I believe that on that front, I behaved much more graciously than Locke. ”
"Cih ..." Lorist clicked his mouth and said, "Don't forget that you ran for your life naked at that time. ”
The gang immediately burst into laughter.
