Peritoneal dialysis:

This CAPD blood washing method uses the peritoneum (a membrane in the abdominal cavity) as a filter. The peritoneum has thousands of tiny blood vessels that function just like the kidneys.

Small incisions are made near the navel for the entrance of a special hose or catheter. This catheter will be left in the abdominal cavity permanently. Its function is to insert dialysate fluid, which is a liquid that contains high sugar to attract waste substances and excess fluid from surrounding blood vessels, into the abdominal cavity. When finished, dialysate fluid that already contains residual substances is drained into a special bag that is finally discarded. Then replaced with fresh sterile liquid.

The advantage of the process of washing blood with this method is that it can be done at home, at any time, and usually done while the patient is sleeping. However, this method must be done four times each day and takes about 30 minutes. Side effects can be peritonitis (peritoneal infection that surrounds the abdominal cavity), the stomach feels full when dialysis takes place, weight gain because dialysate fluid contains high levels of sugar, and, or the appearance of a hernia due to the weight of fluid in the abdominal cavity." Dira immediately shuddered at the second method.
