The Story of the Event of Isra Miraj Prophet Muhammad SAW
Isra Miraj, which is celebrated every 27th of Rajab, is one of the important events in the Islamic journey of Prophet Muhammad SAW. This journey became an important event for the Prophet Muhammad because on this event the Prophet Muhammad SAW get the order to perform five prayers time from Allah SWT.
The Challenge of Da'wah before Isra Miraj Prophet Muhammad SAW
In 10 Hijri (619 AD), the Islamic preachings that were echoed by Prophet Muhammad SAW experienced the most difficult and bitter times. That year, the uncle of the Prophet SAW, Abu Talib, who always guaranteed his salvation in preaching, was called by Allah Taala.
Two months later, his beloved wife, Khadijah r.a., who always accompanied the Prophet in preaching and motivating him when experiencing interference and threats, was also called by Allah Swt. The Prophet was very sad because his two loved ones left him for good.
After his uncle and wife died, the Prophet SAW's preaching in Makkah was deadlocked. The security of the Prophet SAW in preaching is lost. The Prophet also preached to the country of Thaif, namely to the Banu Tsaqif who is an honorable tribe in the Arabian Peninsula, but they rejected the teachings of Islam in a very rude way. Some fools of them even pelted the Prophet with pebbles and animal dung, up to two feet of the Prophet covered in blood.
Prophet Muhammad SAW was very saddened by their rejection of his preaching. On the way back to Makkah, under the date tree, the Prophet prayed with a heart of sorrow. His holy lips spoke these beautiful words:
“Allahuma O Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, the lack of my power in front of men. O Lord Almighty, You are the Lord of the weakened and the Lord of my protector. To whom would you surrender my fate? To the faraway who has a grim face towards me, or to the enemy who will rule over me? As long as You are not angry with me, I do not care; for the great pleasure You have bestowed upon me. I take refuge in Your face that shines in darkness, that brings good in the world and the Hereafter, from Your wrath and (punishment) that You will inflict on me. To You, I am stirring up my thoughts so that You will be pleased with me. And, no effort but by Your will.”
When going to enter the city of Mecca, the Prophet SAW felt a very strong pressure from the infidels of Quraysh. The prophet SAW several times asked for the protection of salvation to the tribes who were on good terms with the Banu Hashim, but no one wanted to protect him.
Until finally, the Prophet SAW obtained security from a polytheist man named Muth’im bin ‘Adi who is the head of the tribe of Bani Naufal. After passing through many obstacles and difficulties in this mission in Makkah, Allah Swt. then glorified him with the journey of Isra Miraj which occurred in the 12th year of Prophethood.
The Prophet of Allah did the Isra Mi'raj on the night of 27 Rajab by passing through every layer of the sky accompanied by the Angel Gabriel. In the second heaven, he met with Prophet Isa AS and one other prophet.
Mentioned in the Jawami' As-Sirah An-Nabawiyah by Ibn Hazm al-Andalusi and translated by Indi Aunullah, Isra Mi'raj Prophet Muhammad SAW started from the Grand Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque. The journey then continues from Masjidil Aqsa to Sidratul Muntaha by passing through each layer of the sky.
Isra's Event
The event of Isra Miraj is the spiritual journey of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, namely the journey from the Grand Mosque in Mecca to the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.
In Arabic, Isra means travel at night, while Miraj means ascension. On his journey,
The distance between Mecca and Jerusalem at that time was generally taken by horse or camel for one month, but the Prophet Muhammad SAW did it overnight. In Al Aqsa Mosque told, Prophet Muhammad led the prophet prayer – the previous prophet prayed two rakaats.
Miraj
The Miraj event was carried out by the Prophet Muhammad from Al Aqsa Mosque to ascend to the seventh sky or Sidratul Muntaha. In his journey, Prophet Muhammad SAW met with prophets – previous prophets at every level namely :
The story of the spiritual journey is told in Kitab al-Isra' wa al-Mi'raj by Ibn Hajar As-Asqalani and Imam as-Suyuthi as translated Arya Noor Amarsyah by relying on the hadith issued by the Muslim Imam from Hamad ibn Salamah, from Tsabit al-Banani, the Anas ibn Malik RA.
In the story told, the Prophet Muhammad SAW met with the Prophet Adam AS in the sky of the world. Then, he continued on to the second sky. In this place he met with Prophet Isa AS and Prophet Yahya AS.
The two prophets welcomed the arrival of the Prophet and prayed for him well. As the Prophet said,
"Next we are raised to the second heaven. Jibril US also requested that the sky door be opened. He was asked by his doorkeeper, 'Who are you?'
Gabriel replied, 'I am Gabriel.'
Jibril was asked again, 'Who is with you?'
He replied, 'Muhammad.'
The heavenly doorman asked again, 'Has he been sent (to go up to God?'
Gabriel answered, 'He was sent (to go up to God).'
So the door was opened for us and I met two of my cousins, Isa ibn Maryam AS and Yahya ibn Zakariya AS. The two welcomed me and prayed for good for me."
After meeting with Prophet Isa AS and Prophet Yahya AS in the second heaven, Prophet Muhammad continued to travel to the third heaven and met with Prophet Yusuf AS. Then, in the fourth heaven met the Prophet Idris USA.
The journey continues until the seventh sky and Sidratul Muntaha. Before he got there, he met the Prophet Aaron AS in the fifth heaven and the Prophet Moses AS in the sixth heaven. Then, meet with Prophet Ibrahim AS in the seventh heaven.
After reaching Sidratul Muntaha, the angel of Jibril only accompanied him to the door of Sidratul Muntaha then he faced God alone to receive the revelation of prayer. Allah obliges Him to pray fifty times.
He returned to meet Moses.
"What are you commanded? ask the Prophet Moses.
"The prayer is fifty times." He answered.
"Your people will not be able to do it. Go back to your Lord and ask Him for His mercy for your people" said Moses
He looked towards Gabriel to ask for his opinion. So Jibril hinted by saying. "That's right, if you will."
