“Avella, look at this,” said Thisaly enthusiastically. His feet stepped on an unbalanced circle of grass. Avella could clearly see that one patch was swaying.
No, the rumors are true!
Avella walked towards the area indicated by Thisaly. He kneels. True, the grass in this circle seemed to grow on a different soil than the grass around it. He brushed off the buttercup grass, reaching a hard layer of soil. Dredged it. But it didn't work. It was as if the ground and grass on it had already solidified and fused with something underneath.
Avella fingered to the edge of the circle. Got it! The cold sensation of iron greeted his fingertips. With all his might, he opened it.
The iron plate and the flowers on it were raised, displaying a black tunnel underneath. Avella and Thisaly both looked at the passage in disbelief. The light of the sun makes them able to see the inside, albeit dimly. There's a ladder going down. The floor is a neatly arranged stone. However, there was nothing visible inside.
“Are we going down?” ask Thisaly with sparkling eyes.
“Um, looks like no one. So ... down?” avella replied uncertainly. Only after Thisaly lowered her legs did Avella gasp. “Don't let me go down first. Later you follow after I am sure there is no dangerous thing below,” he said. Let whatever spirit he may be, he must not jeopardize the safety of Thisaly. Inevitably he thought, if something happened to Thisaly, who cried not only Mrs. Icewings, but the whole village.
In conclusion, this little girl before him was simply too precious.
So, Avella took the first step. His heart is beating fast. He hoped to find something amazing down there, and prayed that no viper would wait for him under the stairs.
The stairs are pretty narrow. He can't see clearly. Darkness covers. A light came to him from above. “You can use Ariel,” Thisaly said while giving the flashlight to Avella.
Avella grabbed the flashlight, which, apparently, was a toy. Avella laughed when she saw him. It was a toy of a squirrel holding a glowing walnut. Children always carry something unexpected when they leave. Ariel's light is not so bright. But the slightest light in the darkness would be extremely precious. At least, Avella can predict which steps she will take.
Finally, he came to this basement. The stairs widen to form a square room. There's no sign of life down here. Even the mole rat was invisible, at least within the range of Ariel's light. Avella checked every corner of the room, holding back the horror in case a terrible figure was waiting for her. But nothing, thank goodness.
“Thisaly, you can get off. Here safe,” says Avella.
The little girl went down the stairs with agility. Maybe because since the baby he's been crawling in the connecting nets of the room at the Acornite Treehouse. He got to the bottom faster than Avella. Moisture and the smell of moss began to greet his nose. Thisaly's hand squeezes Avella's dress.
“Nothing, really,” said Avella while touching the shoulder of Thisaly. “Maybe this room is a bunker,” he said.
“What is a bunker?” asked Thisaly while directing Ariel's light around the room.
“Bunker is a hiding place in case of disaster or war. Oh, there's a board here ..”
A board attached to the wall caught their attention. Obviously the board was used to put down notes. There were a lot of nails stuck in as well as pieces of paper that were not neat. It seemed, there was someone who took the note in a hurry. The fur of Avella stood up. There was once someone who lived here.
“Alright, let's go up,” replied Thisaly with a vibrating tone of voice.
Avella took a deep breath after inhaling the fresh air on the surface. The wide area always makes it comfortable. He did not care about the grass that was rubbing his feet violently. It is clear that being out in the open is hundreds of times better than a narrow, empty room in the ground. Why would anyone think otherwise?
They walked towards the edge of the meadow. The little birds flew away as soon as they saw the two girls coming. Avella checked her basket. Fortunately, the food is still safe.
He rolled out a white cloth over the grass, then took the food out of the basket one by one. “I brought too many snacks, you have to help me spend it all,” Avella said.
Thisaly nodded excitedly. They enjoy blueberry muffin cake with assam tea. The morning air blew gently, wooing the strands of hair of the two girls out of the intertwine.
“In your opinion, should we report the room to Mr. Fireboots?” ask Thisaly.
Avella thought for a moment. It's nice to have a secret room for them only. But who knows Mr. Fireboots in the midst of their busy lives can still satisfy them by uncovering the mystery of the room. Adults always have their own way of getting things done. After all, in Acclais Village, no secret will last. There were always curious spies, and the news spread rapidly as the sun spread as the morning came. “We just tell Mr. Fireboots. Maybe he knows a lot about the room. He's been alive longer than we are.”
“True. That house I think is very strange, Avella. There is only one room without a kitchen and a bed. There are no lights either. It feels like being in another realm. Very uncomfortable and can not be called home,” said Thisaly.
“What you said was true. I believe that if we stay down there a little longer, we'll find something. It's just—“
“The satisfaction is very gripping inside,” said Thisaly.
“True!” avella is excited. He smiled widely. “This is why I want to be an adventurer, Thisaly. There are too many things we have not seen in this world. I want to meet people I've never met, have a thrilling journey, eat food I've never tasted before. Like that room. It could be just a bunker, or someone's house, or even a headquarters belonging to a secret organization!”
“You'll be gone in a minute, huh? You've finished your lesson with Mrs. Moon. From what you say it sounds very pleasant, but if you have to leave home, it will definitely be lonely as well.”
“Really, anyway. The feeling of wanting to go home must be there. Hence many adventurers gave up before their task was completed. But, just calm down. I've invited Cysther to come with me! Ah, not really sure either, anyway. In addition to having to ask his mother for permission, we also have to compete in the academy. If we both manage to escape, then we will start an adventure together!”
Thisaly listened carefully to Avella's explanation. She is a smart girl. However, there is something gray behind the iris of her round eyes. “A-can I ask?”
“Of course. What do you want to ask?”
Thisaly's lips twitched. It seems that doubt is taking hold of it. Then, he opened his mouth, his voice soft but fast. “How about only Cysther passes, while you don't?”
